What different forks are there and what should I watch out for when buying a new fork? On this page you will find all the important information about all types of fork. Finding the right stable fork for your application is child's play.
When is a fork & pitch fork the right thing for me?
You regularly transport loose material such as hay or straw: With a pitch fork you can quickly distribute loose material such as hay, straw, grass and leaves into the feed troughs or load them onto the trailer.
You want to save time: With a fork that suits your needs, you save valuable time on all work in the yard, stable, pasture and in the garden.
The right fork for your stable in 3 questions
Question 1: Do you regularly transport loose material (leaves, grass, hay, litter, etc.) or do you feed your animals with raw fiber animal feed?
The pitch fork is the ideal tool when you load loose material such as hay, straw, grass or leaves onto a trailer, distribute it into the feeding troughs or fill a cattle hay rack or hay rack for horses. The pitchfork is also very suitable for sprinkling or removing stubborn fibers such as straw or hay in stables.
Question 2: Do you have a stable strewn with straw or hay?
Then a litter fork (also manure fork) is the optimal choice. The pitchfork is used in the barn to muck out or litter fibrous litter. Boxes strewn with straw or hay in particular can be quickly and easily cleared with the manure fork.
Question 3: Do you have a stable sprinkled with shavings or do you regularly clear the pasture?
Cattle boxes or horse boxes that are filled with sawdust or other fine litter can be cleaned quickly and easily with a bedding fork. The special tine shape ensures easy absorption of the manure. The manure fork is also excellently suited for mucking out riding arenas and paddocks.
Pitch fork, litter fork, dung fork or bedding fork - Overview of all differences
The standard forks differ according to the number and shape of the tines, the length of the handle and the material. Depending on the area of application, you should choose the right fork. Here you will find a practical overview of all stable fork types and the corresponding areas of application.
1. Pitch Fork / Hay Fork
A pitchfork (hay rake or hay rake) is ideal for moving the loose hay. The pitchfork is the ideal tool when you load hay onto a trailer, distribute it into the feed troughs or fill a cattle hay rack or hay rack for horses. Pitchforks usually have a wooden handle and are available with 3 or 4 tines. The tines are bent a little more, the handle of the pitch fork is longer and thinner than a litter fork.
The litter is moved with the scattering fork - similar to the pitchfork. Models with 3 to 4 tines are also suitable as scattering forks. For hygienic reasons, you should use different forks for the forage / hay and bedding.
The pitch fork can be used for the following applications:
- The pitch fork is suitable for sprinkling or removing animal feed such as straw or hay in stables.
- For loading and unloading loose material such as grass, leaves, hay, straw etc. the pitch fork is optimal.
- Light loads can be lifted with a pitchf ork (like smaller hay bales).
2. Litter fork & manure fork
The litter fork (also manure fork or dung fork) consists of a head with 4 to 5 slightly curved robust tines made of stainless steel. The handle of the manure fork is slightly curved and significantly shorter and thicker than the conventional pitch fork. The Mistboy made of plastic with a shovel and rake is perfect as a manure scoop for horse apples.
The litter fork can be used for the following areas:
- The litter fork is used in the stable for mucking out or littering. Epecially with straw or hay strewn boxes can be cleared quickly and easily with the litter fork.
- With a litter fork it is easy to pick up straw bales and lift them into the wheelbarrow.
- Thanks to the manageable tines, little hay or straw gets tangled in the manure fork, so that it can be mucked out economically.
3. Bedding fork
The bedding fork is a large manure fork with a wide head and tines made of plastic or metal. Bedding fork models made of plastic are lighter and the tines are more flexible. Bedding forks have the task of absorbing faeces and therefore many highly elastic tines, which are bent in the front area.
The bedding fork is particularly deep and therefore has a significantly larger volume than other pitchforks. The large filling volume means that mucking out is faster than with flat forks. If you remove fences from the grass in the cold season, we recommend that you use a stainless steel bedding fork due to its stability and wear resistance, as plastic bedding forks become brittle in frost and can break more easily.
The bedding fork can be used for the following applications:
- Boxes with sawdust as bedding can be cleaned quickly and easily with a bedding fork.
- A wide-ranging bedding fork with a large filling volume is ideal for mucking out riding arenas and paddocks.
You have to consider this when buying a fork & pitch fork:
Depending on what you use the fork for, you should consider important factors such as the processing and quality of the fork, the number of tines and the length of the handle. The following purchase criteria help you to find the optimal pitch fork:
Number of tines: A hay fork with 2 tines is ideal for working in the warehouse. If the fork in the barn is used for spreading and manure removal, 3 to 4 tines are an advantage. When gardening, we recommend using a fork with at least 4 tines. If you collect feces on the pasture or paddock, then a bedding fork with many tines placed close together is particularly practical.
Length of the handle: The length of the fork handle is important for the relief of the body during work and you should adjust it accordingly to the body size. You can find the optimal length with a quick self-test: Stand upright and bend your arms, with your arms at right angles. If you can now comfortably grip the top of the handle, you have found the optimal handle length.
Material: Forks are usually made of plastic or stainless steel. The classic material for the fork handle is ash wood, but handles made of stainless steel and plastic are also becoming increasingly popular. For heavy loads, working in the garden or in the cold season we recommend you to use a stainless steel fork with a wooden or stainless steel handle. Forks made of stainless steel are significantly more stable than those made of plastic, which become brittle when subjected to heavy use and frost and can break more easily.
- Ergonomics & Extras: In your daily work, forks help with an ergonomic and non-slip grip to relieve your body.
