What are Electric Fence Insulators?

In the construction of an electric pasture fence, the current must be insulated and safely conducted through the fence system. Insulators separate current-carrying conductor material such as rope, polywire, fencing tape or fence wire from the fence post. In doing so, they prevent electrical energy from the fence from being unintentionally diverted into the ground.

Insulators ensure the correct voltage of the conductor material. The conductor material thus remains at the desired height and does not sag. A stable and taut pasture fence is important to prevent your animal from sneaking away. It also makes it more difficult for wild animals to get in. In order to make it possible to work with different conductor materials, insulators are divided into ring insulators, tape insulators and wire/rope insulators.

1. Which insulator is suitable for your conductor material?

Due to their shape, ring insulators can be used for pasture fencing wire, fencing ropes as well as for narrow fencing tapes. Tape insulators are insulators that are used for fencing tapes. Wire insulators and rope/strand insulators are designed to insulate and guide narrow ropes and wires.

2. How does your electric fence become particularly stable?

Robust insulators contribute to the overall stability of your pasture fence. Insulators with a continuous support, for example, are suitable for a more robust guidance of the conductor material. Here the metal piece is embedded in the plastic holder of the insulator. In contrast to screw-in ring insulators, tape insulators and strand/rope insulators are screwed into the fence post at the upper and lower end of the insulator. This double screwing additionally contributes to the stability of the insulator.

3. Which insulator do you need for the corners of the pasture fence?

Corner insulators are required to direct the conductor material in the required direction. These can withstand the high tensile forces at the corners.

4. How do you prevent your animal from chewing on the insulator?

Some animals (e.g. horses) particularly like to nibble on the wooden posts. To prevent your fence from being damaged, you can use strain insulators. With their long handle, these insulators keep the conductor material at a greater distance from the grazing pole. Should your animal now tamper with the pole, the insulator and the conductor material will not be damaged.
